Generic Verapamil (Verapamil ER) is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. This medication works by reducing the amount of narrowing (constriction) of the blood vessels caused by high blood pressure. This makes it easier for blood to flow through the vessels and lowers blood pressure. Generic Verapamil (Verapamil ER) also slow the heart rate and affect the pumping action of the heart and relax the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle.

Store at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.

How to take Generic Verapamil (Verapamil ER)?

  • Take Generic Verapamil (Verapamil ER) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • Take each dose with a full glass of water.
Do not stop taking this medication without first talking to your doctor. If you stop taking the medication, your condition could become worse.
DOSAGE:
According to the manufacturers, the calcium channel blockers (non-dihydropyridines) can be dosed up to a maximum daily dose at the interval(s) as indicated in the table below. A quantity of each drug will be considered medically necessary as indicated in the table below:

If OVERDOSE
Symptoms of a Generic Verapamil overdose include dizziness, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, an unusually fast or slow heartbeat, coma, slurred speech, and confusion. If overdose is suspected, contact your local emergency room immediately.
    If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor or contact your local emergency room immediately:
  • swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, arms, or legs
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • fainting
  • rash
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • fever
  • increase in frequency or severity of chest pain (angina)

What to do if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose.
Do not take a double dose of this medication.

Who should not take Generic Verapamil (Verapamil ER)?

    Generic Verapamil tablets are contraindicated in:
  1. Severe left ventricular dysfunction
  2. Hypotension (systolic pressure less than 90 mm Hg) or cardiogenic shock
  3. Sick sinus syndrome (except in patients with a functioning artificial ventricular pacemaker)
  4. Second-or-third-degree AV block (except in patients with a functioning artificial ventricular pacemaker)
  5. Patients with atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation and an accessory bypass tract (e.g., Wolff-Parkinson- White, Lown-Ganong-Levine syndromes). (see WARNINGS)
  6. Patients with known hypersensitivity to verapamil hydrochloride.
Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Verapamil prolongs and intensifies the effects of alcohol in your system. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL (or very carefully limit) while you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. WHILE YOU ARE USING THIS MEDICINE, brush and floss your teeth carefully to reduce swelling and tenderness of your gums.
FOR WOMEN:
IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

What side effects may occur?

You may have constipation, dizziness or lightheadedness, headache, upset stomach, heartburn, excessive tiredness, flushing (feeling of warmth), slow heartbeat, vivid, unusual dreams.

Generic Verapamil (Verapamil ER) Drug Interactions

    If you are taking any of the medicines listed below:
  • cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral);
  • cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB);
  • carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol);
  • lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others);
  • theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theochron, Theolair, Theobid, Elixophyllin, Slo-Phyllin, others);
  • rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane);
  • phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton);
  • an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor), simvastatin (Zocor), and others; or
  • another heart medication such as propranolol (Inderal), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), atenolol (Tenormin), digoxin (Lanoxin), quinidine (Quinora, Quinidex, Quinaglute), flecainide (Tambocor), disopyramide (Norpace), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), and others.
    You should require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with verapamil or affect your condition. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Generic Verapamil. The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
  • Avoid the use alcohol. Alcohol may further lower blood pressure and increase drowsiness and dizziness while taking verapamil. -Follow any recommendations your doctor makes about diet or exercise.

Do not share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use this medicine for other health conditions. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children. IF using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
