What is Generic Singulair (Montelukast)?

Generic Singulair (Montelukast) is a leukotriene inhibitor. Leukotrienes are substances in the body that are associated with the inflammation and constriction of airway muscles and the accumulation of fluid in the lungs, all of which occur during an asthma attack.

What is Generic Singulair (Montelukast) used for?

This medicine is used for the prevention and long-term treatment of asthma. It reduces the swelling and inflammation that tend to close up the airways, and relaxes the walls of the bronchial tubes, expanding the airways and permitting more air to pass through.
Singulair is also used to relieve the stuffy, runny nose and sneezing caused by seasonal allergies. It is also used to treat allergy symptoms. Singulair works by blocking substances in the body called leukotrienes. Blocking leukotrienes improves asthma and seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Generic Singulair (Montelukast) Facts

Active Ingredients: montelukast sodium.
Other Ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and magnesium stearate.
Class and Mechanism: Montelukast is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) for the maintenance treatment of asthma and to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies. It is not useful for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, so patients should also be supplied with rescue medication, such as an albuterol inhaler. Montelukast blocks the action of leukotriene D4 on the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor CysLT1, thus inhibiting bronchoconstriction.

Generic Singulair (Montelukast) Storage

Store this medicine at room temperature 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted.

How to take Generic Singulair (Montelukast)?

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. Chew thoroughly before swallowing. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Generally, if this medicine is being taken for asthma, it is taken once daily in the evening. If taking for hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis), take the medicine at about the same time each day (either morning or evening). If you are taking for both asthma and hay fever, take the medicine in the evening.
If OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include thirst, drowsiness, dilated pupils, increased muscle movements, or severe stomach pain.

What to do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the previous dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

Who should not take Generic Singulair (Montelukast)?

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking rifamycin antibiotics (e.g., rifampin), certain medicines which stimulate liver metabolism (e.g., phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine), or other asthma medicines. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including liver problems, certain blood disorders (phenylketonuria), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Use of the 4MG tablet is not recommended in children under age 2. Use of the 5 mg tablet is not recommended in children under age 6. Please talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits before giving this medicine to your child.
FOR WOMEN: Singulair should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known whether Singulair appears in breast milk. Because many drugs do make their way into breast milk, use Singulair with caution if you are breastfeeding.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects that may occur while taking this medicine include unusual weakness, stomach upset, diarrhea, dizziness, cough, headache, nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping, or mouth pain. If they continue or are bothersome, contact your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience hallucinations, fever, persistent sore throat or earache, or flu symptoms.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these highly unlikely but serious side effects including stomach pain, muscle aches/cramps, irregular heartbeat, yellowing eyes/skin, numbness/tingling of the hands or feet, easy bruising or bleeding, swelling, or seizures.
An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
