What is Generic Paxil (Paroxitine)?

Generic Paxil (Paroxitine) is the first and only antidepressant indicated for treating panic disorder and the first new drug therapy to be cleared for panic disorder in nearly a decade. Generic Paxil belongs to the class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paxil affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced.

What is Generic Paxil (Paroxitine) used for?

Generic Paxil (Paroxitine) is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Paxil may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Generic Paxil (Paroxitine) Facts

Active Ingredients: paroxetine hydrochloride.
Other Ingredients: dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycols, polysorbate 80, sodium starch glycolate, titanium dioxide, and 1 or more of the following: D&C Red No. 30, D&C Yellow No. 10, FD&C Blue No. 2, FD&C Yellow No. 6.
Class and Mechanism: Paroxitine is an anti-depressant drug that affects the chemicals that nerves in the brain use to communicate with one another. These chemical messengers, called neurotransmitters, are released by one nerve and taken up by other nerves. Neurotransmitters that are released but not taken up by other nerves are taken up by the nerves that release them ("reuptake"). Many experts believe that it is an imbalance among the amounts of the different neurotransmitters that are released that causes depression. Paroxitine works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin by the nerves that release it, an action which allows more serotonin to be available to be taken up by other nerves. Paroxitine is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a class that also contains fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft).

Generic Paxil (Paroxitine) Storage

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

How to take Generic Paxil (Paroxitine)?

It is usually taken once daily in the morning or evening, with or without food. You may want to take Generic Paxil with food to stop it from upsetting your stomach. To help you remember to take Paxil, take it around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Paxil exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Do not crush, chew, or break a controlled-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Paroxitine and gradually increase your dose, not more than once a week.
If OVERDOSE: Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have taken too much of this medication. Symptoms of a Paxil overdose may include nausea, vomiting, tremor, sweating, decreased urination, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, confusion, aggression, seizures, and coma.

What to do if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Who should not take Generic Paxil (Paroxitine)?

Paxil should be used cautiously by people with a history of manic disorders and those with high pressure in the eyes (glaucoma).
If you have a history of seizures, make sure your doctor knows about it. Paxil should be used with caution in this situation. If you develop seizures once therapy has begun, the drug should be discontinued.
If you have a disease or condition that affects your metabolism or blood circulation, make sure your doctor is aware of it.
Paxil may impair your judgment, thinking, or motor skills. Do not drive, operate dangerous machinery, or participate in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness until you are sure the medication is not affecting you in this way.
Antidepressants such as Paxil could potentially cause stomach bleeding, especially when combined with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), and ketoprofen (Orudis KT). Consult your doctor before combining Paxil with NSAIDs or blood-thinning drugs. FOR WOMEN: If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy and receive Paxil, you should discuss other medication options with your health care provider. In some studies, Paxil has been shown to increase the risk for heart problems in infants born to women who received Paxil early in pregnancy. Paxil appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment with Paxil is finished.
