Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by blocking a particular molecule in a type of cell in the stomach, so reducing the amount of stomach acid produced. Class and mechanism: Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which block the production of acid by the stomach. Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which all are caused by stomach acid.
Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole), like other proton-pump inhibitors, blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. By blocking the enzyme, the production of acid is decreased, and this allows the stomach and esophagus to heal.

Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) should be stored at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, light, and moisture. Do not store Nexium in the bathroom.

Take Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) at least one hour before meals. Be careful to swallow it whole. Patients with difficulty swallowing can open the capsule and mix the pellets with applesauce. The applesauce should not be hot and the pellets should not be chewed or crushed.

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.
If OVERDOSE of Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, unusual sweating, blurred vision, or unusually fast heartbeat.

Before taking Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole), tell your doctor if you have ever had any type of liver disease. You may not be able to take Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole), or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring.
Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Do not take Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) passes into breast milk. Do not take Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole).

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
• chest pain or tightness
• dark yellow or brown urine
• shortness of breath
• skin rash
• unusual tiredness or fatigue

Side effects that do occur are usually mild and go away a short time after starting Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole).
• headache
• diarrhea or constipation
• flatulence (gas)
• nausea/vomiting
• dry mouth

An allergic reaction to Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

• Itching
• Swelling
• Dizziness
• Trouble breathing

It can take several days of therapy with esomeprazole before your stomach pains improve. You can take antacids for the occasional relief of pain unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you otherwise.
