What is Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin)?

Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent. Atorvastatin is an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, an early and rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis.

What Is Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) Used For?

Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is used in patients with multiple risk factors for heart disease such as family history, high blood pressure, age, low HDL or smoking to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. When diet and exercise alone are not enough, LIPITOR is used along with a low-fat diet and exercise to lower cholesterol. LIPITOR is also used in patients with type 2 diabetes and at least one other risk factor for heart disease such as high blood pressure, smoking or complications of diabetes, including eye disease and protein in urine, to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) Facts

Class and Mechanism:
Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is an oral drug that lowers the level of cholesterol in the blood. It belongs to a class of drugs referred to as statins It prevents the production of cholesterol by the liver by blocking the enzyme that makes cholesterol, HMGCoA reductase. They lower total blood cholesterol as well as LDL cholesterol levels. (LDL cholesterol is believed to be the "bad" cholesterol that is primarily responsible for the development of coronary artery disease.) Lowering LDL cholesterol levels retards progression and may even reverse coronary artery disease. Unlike the other drugs in this class, Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) also can reduce the concentration of triglycerides in the blood. High blood concentrations of triglycerides also have been associated with coronary artery disease.

Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) Storage

Store at controlled room temperature 20°C - 25°C (68°F - 77°F) [see USP].

How to take Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin)?

Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin)should be taken once a day, with or without food. You can take it in the morning or the evening, but should hold to the same time each day. The drug generally begins working within 2 weeks.
The patient should be placed on a standard cholesterol-lowering diet before receiving Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) and should continue on this diet during treatment with Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin). Doses should be individualized according to the recommended goal of therapy.
There is no specific treatment for Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) OVERDOSAGE. In the event of an overdose, the patient should be treated symptomatically, and supportive measures instituted as required. Due to extensive drug binding to plasma proteins, hemodialysis is not expected to significantly enhance atorvastatin clearance.

What to do if I miss a dose?

Take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.
!!! Do not take 2 doses at the same time.

Who should not take Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin)?

Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is not for everyone. It is not for those with liver problems. And it is not for women who are nursing, pregnant or may become pregnant. It is recommended that liver function tests be performed prior to and at 12 weeks following both the initiation of therapy and any elevation of dose, and periodically (eg, semiannually) thereafter. Liver enzyme changes generally occur in the first 3 months of treatment with Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin). Patients who develop increased transaminase levels should be monitored until the abnormalities resolve. Should an increase in ALT or AST of >3 times ULN persist, reduction of dose or withdrawal of Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is recommended.
Before instituting therapy with Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin), an attempt should be made to control hypercholesterolemia with appropriate diet, exercise, and weight reduction in obese patients, and to treat other underlying medical problems

What side effects may occur?

If you take Generic Lipitor (Atorvastatin), tell your doctor if you feel any new muscle pain or weakness. This could be a sign of rare but serious muscle side effects. Tell your doctor about all medications you take. This may help avoid serious drug interactions. Your doctor should do blood tests to check your liver function before and during treatment and may adjust your dose. The most common side effects are gas, constipation, stomach pain and heartburn. They tend to be mild and often go away.
