What is Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine)?
Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) is an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. For epilepsy it is used to treat partial seizures, primary and secondary tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Lamotrigine also acts as a mood stabilizer. It is the only anticonvulsant mood stabilizer that treats the depressive as well as the manic phases of bipolar disorders. Chemically unrelated to other anticonvulsants, lamotrigine has relatively few side-effects and does not require blood monitoring. It is a Na+ channel blocker, and is inactivated by hepatic glucuronidation.
What is Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) used for?
Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) is effective in helping to control partial seizures (convulsions) in adults and children with epilepsy. Lamotrigine is also used in adults and children who have generalized (major) seizures (convulsions) due to a special condition named Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Lamotrigine is usually prescribed with other medications that also help to control the convulsions, although sometimes lamotrigine may be used by itself. Lamotrigine is also used in adults for a mental health condition called bipolar disorder.
Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) Facts
Active Ingredients: lamotrigine.
Other Ingredients: lactose; magnesium stearate; microcrystalline cellulose; povidone; sodium starch glycolate; FD&C Yellow No. 6 Lake.
Class and Mechanism: Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) is an anticonvulsant drug. One proposed mechanism of action for lamotrigine, the relevance of which remains to be established in humans, involves an effect on sodium channels. In vitro pharmacological studies suggest that lamotrigine inhibits voltage-sensitive sodium channels, thereby stabilizing neuronal membranes and consequently modulating presynaptic transmitter release of excitatory amino acids (e.g. glutamate and aspartate).
Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) Storage
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
How to take Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine)?
Take Generic Lamictal exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each oral dose of Lamictal with a full glass of water. Swallow the regular (nonchewable) Lamictal tablets whole. The tablets may have a very bitter taste if chewed, crushed, or broken. Lamictal can be taken with or without food.
The dose of Lamictal must be increased slowly. It may be several weeks or months before the optimal dose can be determined.
Do not stop taking Lamictal without first talking to your doctor, even if you feel better. It is important to continue taking Lamictal to prevent symptoms from recurring. Stopping Lamictal suddenly may result in increased seizure frequency or a return of symptoms of bipolar disorder. If the medication needs to be stopped, your doctor may need to lower the dosage gradually.
If treatment with Lamictal is stopped for any reason, contact your doctor before restarting the medication. A lower dose may be needed to prevent side effects from occurring. Do not take more of this medication than is prescribed by your doctor.
If OVERDOSE: Generic Lamictal may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or poor coordination. Do not drive, operate dangerous machinery, or perform other hazardous activities until you know how Lamictal affects you. If you experience drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or poor coordination, avoid these activities.
What to do if I miss a dose?
In general, if you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, delay that dose for a few hours, instead of taking two doses very close together. Then go back to the regular schedule. If you usually take Lamictal only once day, it might be a good idea to wait about 12 hours before taking the next dose. Then you can go back to a 24-hour schedule the next day. If you're not sure about what to do, call the doctor's office for more advice.
If you forget doses often, it may be a good idea to get a special pillbox or watch with an alarm to remind you.
Taking the right amount of seizure medicine on time every single day is the most important step in preventing seizures!
Who should not take Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine)?
Before taking lamotrigine, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to lamotrigine, or any other medications. If you will be taking the chewable dispersible tablets, tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfa medications or saccharin.
Do not take Generic Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) if you are using female hormonal medications such as hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills, patches, rings, injections, implants, or intrauterine devices), or hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Talk to your doctor before you start or stop taking any of these medications while you are taking lamotrigine. If you are taking a female hormonal medication, tell your doctor if you have any bleeding between expected menstrual periods.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart, kidney, or liver disease or a blood disorder. FOR WOMEN: There are insufficient data available on the use of Lamictal in human pregnancy to evaluate its safety. Lamictal should not be used in pregnancy unless, in the opinion of the physician, the potential benefits of treatment to the mother outweigh any possible risks to the developing fetus. Lamictal passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not take Lamictal without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
What side effects may occur?
Most people who take Generic Lamictal tolerate it well. The most common side effects are dizziness, drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, nausea, and rash. If a skin rash occurs at any time while taking Lamictal, contact your prescriber immediately. Rashes may be very severe and sometimes requires being treatment in the hospital. Deaths from rashes have occurred. Serious rashes occur more often in children than adults taking Generic Lamictal. It is more common for these serious rashes to occur during the first 2 months of treatment, but a rash can occur at any time.
Generic Lamictal (Lamotrigine) Drug Interactions
Other medications can increase or decrease the effectiveness of lamotrigine. The valproate antiepileptic drugs (divalproex, Depakote; valproate sodium, Depakon; valproic acid, Depakene) inhibit the metabolism of lamotrigine, more than doubling its half-life. The dosage of lamotrigine must be reduced in the presence of these drugs. The enzyme-inducing AEDs (including carbamazepine USP, Tegretol; oxcarbazepine, Trileptal; and phenytoin, Dilantin) enhance the metabolism of lamotrigine, and its dosage must be increased when taken with these drugs; the same consideration is required when Lamictal is taken with oral contraceptives.
