Class and Mechanism
Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) is an oral blood-glucose-lowering drug of the sulfonylurea class. It works by stimulating the release of your body's natural insulin. Effectively controlling blood sugar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, and circulation problems, as well as sexual function problems (impotence).

Store Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) in a tightly-closed container at room temperature below 86 degrees f (30 degrees c), away from heat, moisture, and light.

Take Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) by mouth 30 minutes before a meal. Tablets should be swallowed whole. They should not be chewed, divided or crushed. This would damage the tablet and release too much medicine into your body at one time.
After all of the medicine has been released, the empty tablet shell will pass out of the body normally in a bowel movement. Do not be concerned if you see the empty tablet shell in your stool (bowel movement).
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Take Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking the medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember.
If OVERDOSE is suspected call your doctor or your local emergency immediately.
Symptoms of overdose may include shakiness, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and loss of consciousness.

If you miss a dose of Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL), take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Do not use Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) if you:
• have a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis
• have ever had an allergic reaction to glipizide or any of the other ingredients in Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL). Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a list of these ingredients.

Only your healthcare provider can decide if Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) is right for you. Before you start Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL), tell the healthcare provider if you:
• are taking or using any prescription medicines or non-prescription medicines, including natural or herbal remedies. Other medications can increase your chance of getting low blood sugar or high blood sugar. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you take the medicines miconazole or fluconazole, used to fight fungus infections.
• have ever had a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis
• have kidney or liver problems
• have had blockage or narrowing of your intestines due to illness or past surgery
• have chronic (continuing) diarrhea
• are pregnant or might be pregnant. Your healthcare provider may switch you to insulin injections some time during your pregnancy. You should not take Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) during the last month of pregnancy.
• are breast-feeding. Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) may pass to the baby through your milk and cause harm.

You should call your doctor immediately if you experience some of the side effects listed below:
• sore throat or fever
• easy bleeding/bruising
• stomach pain
• yellowing eyes or skin
• dark urine
• unusual tiredness or weakness
• unusual or sudden weight gain
• mental/mood changes
• swelling of the hands or feet, or seizures.

This medicine can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). This effect may occur if you do not consume enough calories (from food, juices, fruit, etc). The symptoms include: chills, cold sweat, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, shaking, rapid heart rate, weakness, headache, fainting, tingling of the hands or feet, or hunger.
To prevent hypoglycemia, eat meals on a regular schedule and do not skip meals.
Glucotrol Xl (Glipizide XL) may cause an allergic reaction. Its symptoms are: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing

It is not recommended to use Generic Glucotrol XL (Glipizide XL) with:
• thiazides and other diuretics,
• corticosteroids,
• phenothiazines
• thyroid products
• estrogens
• oral contraceptives
• phenytoin
• nicotinic acid
• sympathomimetics
• calcium channel blocking drugs
• isoniazid.

When such drugs are administered to a patient or are withdrawn from apatient receiving glipizide, he should be observed closely for hypoglycemia.
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Glucotrol XL.
