What is Generic Glucophage (Metformin)?

Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) is an oral medication that lowers blood glucose (sugar) and is used for treating type 2 diabetes. Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) is for people with type 2 diabetes who do not use daily insulin injections. This medication is not for treating type 1 diabetes.

What is Generic Glucophage (Metformin) used for?

Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Treatment is combined with a balanced diet and exercise. This medicine lowers blood sugar and helps your body to use insulin more efficiently. It is sometimes used with other medicines for diabetes.

Generic Glucophage (Metformin) Facts

Active ingredient: metformin hydrochloride
Other Ingredients: sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate.
Class and mechanism: Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that lowers glucose levels in blood by reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver and by increasing the removal of glucose from the blood by muscle and fat tissues. Diabetes results because of reduced production of insulin and reduced uptake (and effects) of insulin on the body's tissues.
Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) acts by increasing the sensitivity of liver, muscle, fat, and other tissues to the uptake and effects of insulin. These actions lower the level of sugar in the blood. Unlike glucose-lowering drugs of the sulfonylurea class, e.g. glyburide (Micronase; Diabeta) or glipizide (Glucotrol), metformin does not increase the concentration of insulin in the blood and, therefore, does not cause excessively low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia) when used alone. In scientific studies, metformin reduced the complications of diabetes such as heart disease, blindness and kidney disease.

Generic Glucophage (Metformin) Storage

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from moisture and light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

How to take Generic Glucophage (Metformin)?

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger or smaller amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication.
Take Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) once daily with your evening meal, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) is only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and weight control. It is important to use this medicine regularly to get the most benefit. Get your prescription refilled before you run out of medicine completely.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
If OVERDOSE occurs seek emergency medical attention. You may have signs of low blood sugar, such as hunger, headache, confusion, irritability, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, tremors, sweating, fast heartbeat, seizure(convulsions), fainting, or coma. An overdose of Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) may cause a life-threatening condition called lactic acidosis. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these symptoms of lactic acidosis: weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain, feeling light-headed, and fainting.

Who should not take Generic Glucophage (Metformin)?

Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) should not be taken by the following categories of persons:
  • People who have kidney or liver problems
  • People who drink alcohol excessively
  • People with serious conditions such as a heart attack or severe infection
The safety of using Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) in pregnant women has not been established. Women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy should tell their healthcare provider immediately so the right medication can be prescribed.

What side effects may occur?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these symptoms of lactic acidosis: weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain, feeling light-headed, and fainting.
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
  • breathing difficulties or shortness of breath
  • dizziness
  • muscle aches or pains
  • passing out or fainting
  • severe vomiting or diarrhea
  • slow or irregular heartbeat
  • unusual stomach pain or discomfort
  • unusual weakness, fatigue or discomfort
Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) is less likely to occur when Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) is taken alone. Hypoglycemia may occur when Generic Glucophage (Matfarmin) is taken in combination with insulin, sulfonylurea agents or Prandin (repaglinide). (Sulfonylurea agents and Prandin are other types of diabetes pills.)
Serious side effects are very rare and occur mostly in people whose kidneys or liver are not working normally. The most serious side effect is lactic acidosis. It may be life threatening. Your healthcare provider will check your kidney and liver function to determine if you are at risk.
