Wat Is Generic Avapro (Irbesartan)?
Generic Avapro (Irbesartan) helps lower blood pressure to normal levels. It controls high blood pressure, but it is not a cure. High blood pressure can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Generic Avapro helps prevent these things from happening.
What Is Generic Avapro (Irbesartan) Used For?
Generic Avapro is used to treat high blood pressure. A member of the new family of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, it works by preventing the hormone angiotensin II from narrowing the blood vessels, an action that tends to raise blood pressure. Generic Avapro may be prescribed alone or with other blood pressure medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, Avapro is also prescribed to stave off damage to the kidneys, often delaying the need for dialysis and a kidney transplant.
Generic Avapro Facts
Active Ingredients: The active ingredient of Generic Avapro is irbesartan
Other Ingredients: Lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium, poloxamer 188, silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate
Class and Mechanism: Irbesartan is among a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers and is similar to losartan (Cozaar) and valsartan (Diovan). All three drugs block angiotensin II, a chemical that causes the arteries and veins to narrow, from attaching to the arteries and veins and causing them to narrow. As a result, the arteries and veins dilate (become larger), and blood pressure is reduced. When the blood pressure is reduced, the heart doesn't have to work as hard to pump blood.
